La musique Litteraire

The picture above demonstrates that music literacy, in its written form, is close and personal to me. Personal because I took time and a lot of care, to write the music symbols on the treble staff.

Music literacy is very personal, because it engages most of our musical senses, and I would be tempted to say all of our senses subliminally. The visual makes it possible to see the music score above, and follow the trajectory of a short rhythmic melody that is moving upward. I can also see the melody starting with a silent down beat, followed by an elegant succession of alternating 16th and 8th notes. on the following 2 beats. The fast motion ascends to a slower set of notes that lead to a longer note. Auditory: the notes can be sang, played on an acoustic and electronic musical instrument, and listened to. The use of a musical instrument characterizes the touch. For instance, if I do not like the melody or that song, in other words, if I do not feel it, refers to our taste. Since I am analyzing this apparently simple melodic phrase above, I can also claim that six of the seven sevens music notations are also present: clefs, names, letters, notes, rests, sharps.

I always have set expectations when I am facilitating the learning process of new concepts that can have immediate effects on the attitude and decision making of my students, readers and listeners. Now I am addressing my readers, and my expectations are only a click or two away. After reading my ongoing discourses on music literacy and musicianship, would you please subscribe to musicalway and share the links with your friends, who in turn can do likewise. When you do your part, I am certain that the attitude towards music literacy will change and become the norm. Thank you for your active participation.

Music literacy is effective and commendable when through his musicianship a music educator, conductor, can simplify the understanding of music notation. The latter is essential in making the performance of devoted non-musicians an enjoyable experience. Throughout the years, most of the choir members who participated in my cantatas, weekly choir renditions, and music programs relied on the basic sight-reading and identification of symbols I provided to them. For instance, the vocabulary words below (step/skip, up/down, crescendo/decrescendo, long/short, high/low; same/different etc...) describe the music symbols. There is nothing more rewarding than to keep everything simple, and easy to follow.

Music literacy is no less important than any other forms of literary. Musicianship is the art of bringing to light concepts that are based on the awareness of contents that can undeniably improve communication. Literacy is a process of discovering information that was always in plain sight, but was not part of our immediate interests. Very often I meet people who question the need for literacy, and my response has always been, when you read you will find new knowledge.

When I teach music notation to headstart up to Grade 3, I use chart, sign language (better known as the Kodaly hand signs), and many more ways to help multiple intelligences, meaning children who require more than one way to comprehend a concept.

Students who are academically challenged can benefit from the various approaches cited above, adding modeling, visual, prompt, and fading prompts to understand what is being taught. The C Major scale is represented by 8 hand positions from middle C to another C, an octave on the 3rd space of the treble clef.

Octave means 8 notes apart beginning and ending with the same letter. For instance: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C; C-C is called an octave.

I always insist that my students learn to have a personal touch with music through writing the music symbols. The main reason is that, when they play a musical instrument, everything they do will be very personal: the style, the sound, the expression, the joy, the frustration cannot be transferred.

A student, who learns how to value music from a young age, has an early exposure to understanding details, minute details that will be very useful.

The concept of respect is vertical, because it starts upwards and expands downward. We must look up to God where cometh our help to develop the ability to reach out to those who are next to us. Any other way is bound to fail. If a child does not respect his parents, it is impossible for him to respect authorities, and his peers. Life follows the concept of a domino effect. If, and only if you follow god's commandments, that you would be able to relate effectively to your peers and strangers. Musicianship consists in obeying and following the basic rules of harmony.

. A musician who excels in the service of God, and of God's people, is also expected to grow in the wisdom that comes only through the knowledge of God's words. The musician holds the reins of the unique discipline that leads to reverence due only to the living and creator God. The minister of music must be a true follower of Jesus. This process is only possible under the leading of the Holy Spirit. Only then his musicianship can lead church congregants to understand and apply the words spoken by Jesus found in Matthew 22: 37-40. Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. This is the work of a lifetime, and the fast food concept does not apply.

K.W.S.B. What about Jimi Hendrix and every other genius who never learnt to write from a m early age? Huh haha :) I agree, it can definitely help but it's not essential to musical genius or creativity at large :) I believe it is how much someone loves and dedicated to what they do. Where can I learn this from you ?

You made a great point. because music literacy is not limited to reading, writing, and interpreting notes and symbols. It also encompasses, naturally born talented, and skillful individuals. Before the age of printing press, I am sure the world then had many Jimi Hendrix and other music geniuses. What has changed is that music literacy [reading and writing] has modernized the way music is transmitted between the generations. Now we have the oral and written traditions. On my facebook page, I have step by step details of some of the ways you can become familiar with music notation.
